Blog 8: Final Blog

Wow the final blog! Summer came and went so fast its kind of frightening. Well I found this class and our blogging assignments very fun. I enjoyed meeting and getting to know my fellow classmates, you guys were all very friendly and I hope I'll see around the campus this coming fall semester. I don't think I'll continue blogging right now because its difficult for me to take time out of my day to write. I did find blogging entertaining though maybe I'll get back into it in the future when I'm not caught up in so many things. Thank you all who followed and commented on my post.

Blog 7: Preventing Youth Drug Use

Informing children about the dangers of drug abuse is an essential part of their rite of passage toward adulthood. For me personally I had 2 talks with my parents, one about the risks of sexual activity and the other about the dangers of drug abuse. Now that I'm older I really appreciate them taking time to honestly inform me and answer any questions that were on my mind. If I learned anything about drugs from my D.A.R.E. program in elementary school I wouldn't hesitate to ask my parents because they made me feel very comfortable speaking about the subject. When I do have children in the future I'll most likely do the same for them as my parents did for me. I'd create a caring and comforting atmosphere so they won't have any fear or hesitation of asking questions that they're having trouble understanding. I'd clear their confusion at an early age so they can perceive that substances, such as alcohol, can negatively effect a persons life and their goals. I'd also expose them to documentaries, books, and magazines that show what can actually happen if you become dependent on a substance. We are all exposed at least once in our life to drug use, whether its from friends, school, or a party. I believe its better to be informed than to know nothing about the consequences or what drugs actually are.

Blog 6: "You in 6 Words"

Modest, Motivated, Ambitious, Attentive, Honest, Open-minded
                              http://www.smithmag.net/sixwords/story.php?did=355394

For this blog assignment I decided to choose 6 words that I feel define me. Most of my friends have described me as highly motivated and ambitious in every task and activity I choose to do. I've also been told that I'm pretty modest and open-minded, because I'll take information and ideas from conversations and apply them to my lifestyle. I also find that many of my friends come and talk to me about whats bothering them because I listen attentively and give honest feedback. I found this activity a little difficult to come up with 6 descriptive words about myself, but with some help from friends it wasn't too bad. I chose the picture of this sign because I believe we all have the personal choice to overcome any problem in order to succeed.

Blog 4: Stress Reduction Through Meditation

For this assignment I decided to try mediation to reduce my stress and anxiety. Mediation is very simple to perform. All you have to do is set aside 15 to 20 minutes to sit down, close your eyes, and focus all your attention on breathing. I sat down outside in my backyard and gave this technique a shot. I closed my eyes and focused all of my attention on breathing deeply in and out for 20 minutes. When I finally opened my eyes I felt uplifted, relaxed, and mentally rejuvenated. All of the stress I had vanished and I felt energized. I think that meditation is a great technique to cope with the feeling of being overwhelmed and stressed, and I would definitely do it again. I believe the reason everyone is so stressed is because in our modern world we are so busy that we forget to take time to fully breath.

Blog 3: Love Language Quiz

The results of my love language quiz revealed and confirmed traits I did and did not know about myself. It confirmed that my number one trait is quality time with a love one. This quiz also validated the fact that I value acts of services over receiving gifts. I personally think that love shouldn't be complicated. It can be as simple as spending an evening helping that special someone study for an exam. The results revealed something new I did not realize about myself. I learned that I value words of affirmation over physical touch. I enjoyed this blog assignment and I found it entertaining and interesting.

"Food Inc" Movie Review

After watching Food Inc. I realized that the majority of consumers have no idea where their food comes from, or how its produced and processed. I was shocked to find out that there are only 4 companies that control most of the food industry. What shocked me the most was when they said that 70% of processed foods contain a genetically modified ingredient. Most of our vegetables and fruits come from genetically engineered seeds that are planted in chemical fertilizer fields. This movie impacted me by answering a question we should all ask ourselves before we have a meal. Where did this food come from? Now that I know, I'm making it a goal to shop smarter and more organically. I would definitely recommend this movie to a friend because people should know where their food comes from and how it is produced. I would inform my friend about the genetic modifications done to plants and animals that may harm us in the future. I would also mention the unfair treatment of farmers and workers by food corporations.
